NARCISSOCENE by Karla Perez-Guevara

"In my drawing as a depiction of the 'narcissocene' I depicted an anonymous person as the “ center of the universe/world”. The figure is looking into a mirror  admiringly and caressing their facade. Instead of seeing their face, they are seeing the Earth. This is to say that people think of themselves as 'the world' and romanticize a repetitive narrative that the Earth was 'made for us' to utilize and inhabit. For example, like when people use the motivation of being more eco-friendly for the future generations and not for the simple fact that the Earth is dying. Also, the sun in the image is placed in the background and also behind the image of the Earth to make it seem as if they are surrounding or orbiting around the anonymous person to convey that they are the 'center of the universe' because usually it is the planets that orbit around the Earth. Additionally, I purposely had the anonymous figure appear white to symbolize white men throughout history."
